Residential Life 22-23 Applications
RA or ARD?
With the support of a cherished team, I was inspired to pour into my job as a Resident Adviser with passion and care. This led to positive feedback and evaluations from professional staff as well as encouragement from my supervisor to apply to a higher position for the next academic year.

From my involvement within the HFS space as well as my curiosity in exploring the nature of each of the HFS staff positions, I knew deep down that being an RA was where I would be "in my element" rather than if I were to be an Assistant Resident Director (ARD). Nonetheless, I applied for the role along with my returner RA application and my summer RA application with the internal motive of not disappointing my supervisor.

About a month later, I found out I had not moved to the next stage of the selection process. This decision allowed me to culminate a valuable belief: that the future opportunities I pursue should be based on my knowledge of myself as no one is more in tune with their qualities, needs, and suitable environments better than oneself. Upon debriefing with my supervisor, I even found out that she had caught onto the hints that the role was not igniting as much of my creative passion as the RA role, and she explained that she would have not been disappointed in my decision to not apply but would have rather admired the self-awareness.

This experience taught me to not pursue opportunities for status or social climbing, but to seek fulfilling experiences that are a reflection of my truest self. For now, I will continue cherishing my continuation as an RA instead of an ARD :)
